Read about Theories and Practices in Early Childhood Education

What are some sites that you find useful for learning about early childhood education (ECE)? Here are some that I found, a few of which I’ve found quite useful.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children is a US institution that conducts research and releases publications. You won’t run far from the NAEYC when it comes to researching the early years – it permeates the field and is quite influential.

The “What Works Clearinghouse” screens studies and research, picking the most reliable for  their “clearinghouse”. It is under the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) within the U.S. Department of Education. If  you want to read research articles, it can be a good place to start. You can look up early childhood education as a specific category.

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviews the existing research on different programs, products, practices, and policies in education. Our goal is to provide educators with the information they need to make evidence-based decisions. We focus on the results from high-quality research to answer the question “What works in education?”

The National Institute of Early Education Research is under the Rutgers Graduate School of Education. They run a blog called “Preschool Matters Today” and also publish journal articles.

The Western Australia Department of Education has a website under their Office of Child Development and Learning, offering information to parents and teachers. There’s also Early Childhood Australia.

The US Department of Health and Human Services has information on early learning and child health and development under their site, “Birth to Age 5: Watch Me Grow”

The Wiley Online Library houses the Journal of Educational Theory  and the University of Illinois hosts the Educational Theory Institute.

Early Childhood Research and Practice is a journal under the University of Illinois. It’s under Dr. Lillian G. Katz, who has done pioneering work in the field

Early Childhood News is a site I really recommend. It has  practical and reliable articles on a variety of topics, and isn’t difficult to read. Parents and teachers alike can benefit from this site!

“Learning Theories” is a website that has descriptions of the basic paradigms and theories in education. It’s a good introductory read.
